Dorm Design Tips From the Dorm Design Divas

Check it out – Many colleges offer dorm layouts online or have sample dorm rooms for viewing. But do not get too excited; dorm rooms are notoriously plain with an institutional feel of twin beds (extra-long), two dressers, and two desks. If you are lucky, you will have air-conditioning!

Plan it out – Develop a budget. Your budget should include a list of dorm room essentials as well as “wish list” items and large items to split with your roommate such as a dorm refrigerator or microwave. This helps to save money and avoid duplicates in an already tight space.

Try to coordinate with your new roommate on your dorm decor (living spaces seem larger with complementary decor) or settle on one common color for large items such as an area rug. Think vertically with lofts or risers. Raising your bed allows you to use the space under your bed for a study area, seating, or storage.

Choose a color scheme – Now the fun part! Begin by deciding on a color palate. Think colorful and bold since the dorm walls will be very bland. We love “crisp white” probably more than you do . . . but trust the divas . . . the dorm room is not the place! When decorating your dorm, color is your friend. Choose a reversible duvet or comforter for more options. Add coordinating pillows, lighting, posters, etc. that express your personality.

Make it cozy – Think comforts of home . . . an inviting bed, a warm throw, good lighting, a soft rug, a cozy place to sit, and accessories that express your style. The more comfort items you can incorporate the better.

Hang it up – Start with lightweight drapes for the window. A bulletin board is a must for displaying photos and mementos. Select posters, wall decals, caulk board stickers, and wall hangings that define your personality. Remember! Dorm rules prevent making holes in the wall. There are many non-damaging adhesive options available (Thanks 3M!) as well as suction cups, tension rods, Velcro, etc.

Light it up – Most dorm rooms have an overhead fluorescent light – only! Fun lamps and cool accent lighting can transform a room, but do not forget a desk lamp for studying. Think hanging . . . swag a small chandelier from a ceiling hook (Yes, a 3M adhesive hook will hold a small chandelier!) or use string lights in coordinating colors.

Keep it organized – Add a shoe organizer to the back of your closet door for shoes or bathroom door for toiletries. Buy an inexpensive closet organizer to add hanging space. A colorful storage trunk does double duty as a coffee table.

Cover it up – What can be covered should be covered (starting with a good mattress pad)! An area rug adds to the decor and provides comfort. Drape the dresser with sheer fabric for interest. Have a piece of glass cut for the desktop so photos and notes can be displayed underneath. A coordinating bed skirt hides items stored under the bed. If your bathroom is down the hall, you will want a robe or spa-wrap.

Cool it down – A small fan keeps air circulating even if you have air-conditioning. A dorm refrigerator is great for keeping drinks cool and storing snacks. Look for a small, frost-free refrigerator with freezer section, adjustable shelves, and a flat top that can double as workspace.

Keep it clean – Do not forget the cleaning supplies! Many a mother will be shocked to see the condition of their little darling’s dorm room on their first visit! A laundry bag is a must since you will be doing your laundry in a laundromat.
