The microwave oven is one of the most prominent symbols of the century; it represents every facet of our culture’s sense of urgency for convenience. Since the microwave oven was invented, it has come in several variations in size and color and ability; where as the first microwave oven may have been just equipped with the basic heating features, the new-age microwaves can heat, defrost, roast and even bake, and it can do all of these in half the time it takes an conventional oven.
With the average family spending more that half its time on the go; whether it be with school or work, the microwave oven serves as an easy way to heat food for fast consumption. Running late in the morning? No time to fry your bacon or scramble your eggs. Not a problem. Thanks to the microwave oven you can heat up a frozen breakfast burrito and in no time Beep! Your breakfast burrito is done and you are still on schedule. Because of the microwave oven we now can be on time for every meeting, class, doctor’s appointment, and etc. without going hungry. Some where there is a mother at work wondering what she will fix for family dinner. Since it’s 5:00 in the evening and she still has tons of errands to run she thinks to herself, “ I’ll just pop the frozen lasagna in the microwave and dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes” (and her family will be none the wiser).
In fact leftovers have never tasted better . Gone are the days where in order to heat up your left over pizza or moo chu chicken you had to first preheat your oven for ten minutes . Nope! Now all you have to do is remove and heat and Wham! instant gratification in under five minutes. So, what would life be like without the microwave oven ? Who knows. If you were to ask my eight year old brother that question you would probably receive a bewildered look that would insinuate that he would be completely crushed by the sheer thought. Once our microwave stopped working and I honestly thought he was going to pass out. He had this expression of sadness and confusion on his face, I honestly could feel his pain. If you’ve ever seen a kid not able to heat up his or her Kids Cuisine Entrée, or their Easy Mac than perhaps you understand what I mean.
The dictionary states that a microwave oven is an electronically operated oven that uses microwaves to generate heat with in the food. However, I think there should be some things added to this definition, it should read as follows:
Microwave oven: a convenient electronically operated oven that uses microwaves to generate heat with in the food, it’s fast, and it saves lives. OK, maybe it doesn’t save lives (but I’m sure it’s saved some marriages) but, in my opinion it is the most innovative invention in the past 50 years.
